This page presents experiments in XML and XSL relating to web site navigation. The following links point to several navigation systems that map this site. All four versions are based on the same XML file which is generated from an MS Access database that is used to maintain the site. The first two versions are the XML files themselves, each with a different XSL file. The next two versions are the same navigation tools used in the home page of this site, the first uses a Java applet and the second a Javascript utility.

  • Version 1. - XML + XSL #1 (static)
    
    This site navigation map is generated by combining our Master XML file with the first XSL file. The menu is static multi-level (supports all levels defined in the XML) and displays short description alongside each item.

    Note: Currently XML is supported only in IE5 browsers. Users of Netscape and other browsers can see use the Html file that is generated by the XML and XSL files.

  • Version 2. - XML + XSL #2 (dynamic)
    
    This site navigation page uses the same Master XML File with a different XSL file. The menu in this case is compact, two-level and dynamic, updating itself for each selection of a main subject. The descriptions in this version are displayed in the status bar.

    Note: Currently XML is supported only in IE5 browsers. Users of Netscape and other browsers can see use the Html file that is generated by the XML and XSL files. The page will not function properly in this case, but the layout can be seen.

  • Version 3. - Java menu based on the XML file
    
    Here the XML file is used as the data source for Branko Dimitrijevic's Java Popup Navigation Applet. It is equivalent to the "MAP II" button on this site's home page (the "Map I" button runs the same applet based on a different XML page).

  • Version 4. - Javascript menu based on the XML file
    
    In this version the XML file is used to create the interface file for Constantin Kuznetsov's Javascript Topbar Static Menu. It is equivalent to the top menu bar used in this site's home page.

  • Version 5. - XML/XSL Site Navigation in Hebrew (IE5 Hebrew enabled only)
    
    Simlar to version 1, this XML file is uses the hebrew fields of the database, and the XSL file takes care of the right-to-left issues.
